Bringing our Gardens to Life

Plants from our gardening club at Ty Llandaff Care Home

We have beautiful gardens and outdoor space here at Tŷ Llandaff, and with the sun starting to make a regular appearance, it has only meant one thing - Gardening Club!

In recent weeks, residents have been busy planting sunflower seeds, which are starting to bloom, as well as germinating salad items and herbs. Out on our terrace, we have new pots of bedding plants which has really brightened up the space.

Whilst we're in mid-Spring and fast approaching Summer, we really wanted to give our outdoor areas some bursts of colour and a beautiful environment for our residents to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air, vitamin D, and a nice cup of tea.

We have also started the journey from soil to plate at our care home in Cardiff. It's an exciting time as we grow our own ingredients and vegetables, which will be supplied to our kitchen team for use in our menus.

This method of "growing our own" has many benefits for our residents. The process of growing the vegetables and herbs gives them a sense of ownership and responsibility and ultimately helps keep their minds and bodies active.

The residents also feel an immense sense of pride and joy when they see the products of their labour grow, much like with our sunflowers. Many of our residents also have fond memories of being out in the garden and sourcing their own vegetables so our Gardening Club has been great for reminiscence as well as enabling our residents to continue with the hobbies they love.

It's safe to say we have all been enjoying the glorious sunshine in Cardiff recently and we look forward to more sunshine and outdoor activities in the coming months.
